Good News Delaware, Your Beaches are the Cleanest!

The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) ranked Delaware Beaches as the cleanest in a ‘Testing the Waters 2014’ Report that presents information on water quality at more than three thousand national beaches along the shores of the Atlantic Oceans, Pacific Oceans, Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes.

Dewey Beach was dubbed the “superstar” of beaches by Delawareonline

Delaware Beaches ranked 1 of 30 states for clean beach water and 3% of its beaches in 2013 exceeded “beach action values (BAV)* which is monitored by local officials who test beach water for bacteria and issue closings or advisories when bacteria levels exceed a certain threshold.

Delaware has 50 miles of Delaware Bay coastline, 25 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline, and 115 miles of inland shoreline along Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay. The state’s marine beach water monitoring program is administered by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).—NRDC Report

This is indeed good news for Delaware whose shoreline represents a $2.2 billion industry, a major part of the state’s economy. This report and the ‘ABC Travel Guides for Kids’ that designated Rehoboth Beach as #4 in its ‘Top 5 US Family East Coast Beach Destinations for 2014’ will help to contribute to what is expected to be a record-breaking season.

A summer forecast for Delaware beaches from the state’s Tourism Office suggested this might be a record-breaking season. The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce and Southern Delaware Tourism both reported an increase in the number of people requesting information on vacationing in Delaware. —News Journal
