Newport, Delaware – Harvey Hanna & Associates (HHA), a Delaware-based commercial real estate developer, owner and manager, today announced a landmark partnership with King Energy to develop more than 19 megawatts of rooftop community solar across eight Harvey Hanna properties in New Castle County. Representing one of the largest community solar initiatives in Delaware, the portfolio will transform more than 1.8 million square feet of existing commercial rooftops into renewable-energy generation sites.
The portfolio, currently in development, is projected to represent more than 19.0 Megawatts Direct Current (MWdc) of solar capacity and generate more than 25.4 million Kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually once fully operational. The projects are expected to avoid an estimated 15.1 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year – equivalent to removing approximately 1,598 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles from the road for an entire year, based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) equivalency estimates.
The partnership also received a significant boost on October 9, when Governor Matt Meyer announced that three of the portfolio’s rooftop solar projects – at Ships Landing Way, Lambson Lane and Dock View Drive – had been accepted into Delaware’s JobsFirst Permitting Accelerator. Harvey Hanna appreciates the Governor’s leadership in establishing the initiative to help advance important energy projects and attract private investment to Delaware.
“At Harvey Hanna, we believe our buildings can do more than simply provide space for businesses – they can also contribute to the communities around them,” said Thomas Harvey, Managing Director, Harvey Hanna & Associates. “We have a significant portfolio of commercial rooftops, and this partnership with King Energy gives us an opportunity to put that existing infrastructure to work in a meaningful way. We’re excited about the long-term environmental and community benefits this program can provide.”
The partnership comes at a time when Delaware is focused on expanding energy generation, strengthening the electric grid and addressing rising energy costs. By bringing additional generation online using existing commercial properties, the HHA portfolio can contribute to those efforts while expanding access to community solar for Delaware residents and businesses.
The program is also designed to expand access to clean energy for low- and moderate-income households, allowing more Delaware residents to benefit from community solar without needing to own a property with a suitable rooftop.
Delaware currently imports a significant share of the electricity it consumes, while state energy policy continues to encourage the expansion of renewable generation. The HHA and King Energy portfolio is projected to contribute approximately 2.2% of the solar generation Delaware needs to meet the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard, which requires utilities to source 40% of their energy from renewable resources by 2035.
“Harvey Hanna has been a terrific partner because they recognized the opportunity that exists on their rooftops and took a long-term view of what those properties can contribute,” said John Witchel, CEO of King Energy. “By working together, we’re able to turn existing commercial buildings into sources of clean energy while expanding access to community solar for Delaware residents.”
The eight-property portfolio includes several significant rooftop installations across New Castle and Middletown, including:
- Jamison Corner Road, New Castle: A 5,200 kWdc installation projected to generate more than 6.8 million kWh of electricity annually.
- 750 Governor Lea Road: A 3,300 kWdc installation expected to produce more than 4.2 million kWh of electricity annually.
- 400 Ships Landing Way: A 2,856.6 kWdc installation expected to produce more than 3.7 million kWh of electricity annually.
- Five additional properties in New Castle County: Complementing the three flagship sites, these installations will contribute to a portfolio representing one of Delaware’s largest commitments to rooftop community solar.
All eight projects are located within Delmarva Power’s service territory and remain in development, with the installations expected to come online in the coming years. Harvey Hanna appreciates Delmarva Power’s ongoing engagement with the solar industry and its efforts to support the interconnection of renewable-energy projects, which are an important part of expanding access to community solar and bringing additional clean-energy generation onto Delaware’s electric grid.
For HHA, the partnership represents another step in the company’s commitment to responsible property ownership, innovation, and community investment across Delaware.
